Elab medium-sized Raptors Project 1 Black kite

The Black kite is a medium-sized, opportunistic migratory raptor. The population of Doñana National Park has received much research attention and individual marking. However, many population-level responses to environmental factors are still poorly known (Photo Credit: F. Sergio).

The marshes of Doñana National Park are the favourite hunting habitat of Black kites. They usually flood thanks to autumn-winter rains and progressively dry during the spring-summer. On top of this pattern, the frequency of drought years, when the marshes never really flood, seems to be recently increasing (Photo Credit: F. Sergio).

Integration of long-term demographic monitoring with remote sensing of individual animals will allow greater in-depth in the ranging mechanisms that may produce population-level responses to environmental change (Photo Credit: F. Sergio).
